Peering out our patio window, I watched as the snow pelted our freshly blooming lilacs. The thin branches swayed gently back and forth as the slight wind delivered the snowflakes to rest on top. In my creative mind, I could almost hear the lilacs crying out, “We’re freezing and drooping under the weight of this fresh powdery outpouring from the sky!” Nodding my head up and down, I had to remind myself, “I know Who is large & in charge!”
“For He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth’;
Likewise to the gentle rain and the heavy rain of His strength.” (Job 37:6)
This snowstorm surprise during the merry month of May is an extremely rare occurrence in our treasured Treasure Valley.
Heaven’s Storehouses.
The book of Job in the Old Testament is a challenging read on a good day, not to mention on a stormy one! Toward the end of it, God reveals His omnipotence to Job in a mighty discourse delivered out of the whirlwind.
“Have you entered the storehouses of the snow or seen the storehouses of the hail?” (Job 38:22 – NIV)
If we ever need a reminder of Who is large & in charge, we can read slowly through every line of this chapter.
Here are a few other verses regarding Who controls the weather.
“When He utters His voice,
There is a multitude of waters in the heavens:
And He causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth.
He makes lightning for the rain,
He brings the wind out of His treasuries.” (Jeremiah 10:13)
“Who covers the heavens with clouds,
Who prepares rain for the earth,
Who makes grass to grow on the mountains.” (Psalm 147:8)
“Fire and hail, snow and clouds;
Stormy wind, fulfilling His word.” (Psalm 148:8)
Other supporting verses are Amos 4:7 and Zechariah 10:1.
Born of the Spirit.
“The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” (John 3:8)
The spiritual beauty and reassurance for Christian believers stems from our acceptance of Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior and walking out our daily lives with Him.
Prophetic symbolism for snow is purity and a robe of righteousness as snow on the earth is like a robe of righteousness on an earthen vessel revealing God’s glory to mankind. We have the imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ. (Romans 4:6)
The Trinity, God, His Son, Jesus Christ of Nazareth, and The Holy Spirit not only control everything but can handle anything that comes our way. What a relief it is to know this!
What A Difference A Day Can Make.
The following day, the sun-kissed lilacs were no longer drooping but had bounced back blessing us with their aromatic, spring scent.
The petite, male finches, sporting their little red jackets, had emerged from their hiding place inside the blue finch birdhouse featured on the left side of the above photo. As they nibbled from the standing birdfeeder in our backyard, it was as if they didn’t have a care in the world. Flitting from the feeder to another safe haven inside the boxwood bushes to the right of their birdhouse, they must also know Who is large & in charge.
Oh, the weighty & important lessons we can learn from nature and God’s other creatures!
A Blessed Week of Surprises.
Not only was the May snowstorm a big surprise, but God always does exceedingly and abundantly above all that we ask or think. (Ephesians 3:20-21)
For my Mother’s Day and Birthday week, God surprised me with a visit from all of my children! My cup of blessing and joy overflows.

Prophetic Insights For Daily Living.
#1. It can be so hard to fully trust God in every area of our lives, especially when the storms blow in unexpectedly. Have you learned to trust God for the duration of the storm?
#2. Just like the sunshine helped the lilacs to bounce back after the snowstorm, God’s Son of Righteousness, Jesus Christ, helps us to bounce back after the storms of our lives.
#3. A really happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery when he or she has to take a detour.
“And whoever trusts in the Lord, happy is he.” (Proverbs 16:20b)
Other comforting verses are Proverbs 3:5-6, Psalm 37:3-4, Isaiah 12:2, Matthew 6:25-34, and Luke 12:22-32.
#4. Just like the little male, red finches who had a safe place to shelter during the snowstorm, God provides a refuge for us at all times. A great suggestion is to memorize Psalm 91 where it speaks of dwelling in the shelter of the Most High and resting in the shadow of the Almighty.
#5. Has there been a time in your life when God has shown Himself in some manner to remind you that He is large & in charge of all things?
#6. When God delivers His surprises, it’s so important to remember to thank and honor Him for doing so. Has He surprised you lately?
